Recap of Panel Discussion at Gateway to Innovation 2017

Our panelists presented unique viewpoints at Gateway to Innovation 2017, but three common themes emerged.

panel discussion gateway to innovation

This year’s Gateway to Innovation Conference welcomed 1,500 technology professionals to gather and explore ways to innovate, compete, and grow within the St. Louis region.

As a Silver Sponsor at this year’s event, we hosted a breakout session featuring top technologists from Intel, Monsanto, and bioMérieux to discuss the evolution of software engineering as a cornerstone discipline crucial to achieving speed to market and interoperability of related technologies.

Our panelists presented unique viewpoints and challenges, but three common themes emerged:

1. Begin with the purpose in mind.

All of our guests mentioned the importance of starting with the “why.” Why innovate? What are your company’s goals? What value does a specific change or innovation bring to the customer and to the organization as a whole? Before addressing how to innovate, it is essential to take a big picture approach and ask how innovation correlates with your vision for the organization.

2. Open Source is working.

In a rapidly changing business and technical environment, open standards and Open Source technologies are becoming essential for innovation and scalability. As quoted, “all of us are smarter than any one of us.” Open Source enables our technologists to work with state of the art technologies and and build innovative solutions that will survive over time.

3. Use your data wisely.

Our panelists shared that the root reason for innovation is the vast amounts of data we’re generating. Technology leaders are looking for best practices in how they gather, analyze, and (ideally) extract meaningful information from the terabytes of data flowing through their systems each day.

It was our privilege to host this dynamic and thought-provoking discussion. Big thanks to our panelists and to our engaged audience for participating in this session!
