SAINT LOUIS, MO – April 19, 2023 Object Computing is pleased to announce that artificial intelligence (AI) data scientist Sam Vanfossan and principal software engineer Dorian Yeager have won the top prize in the practitioner competition at the prestigious INFORMS Business Analytics Conference.
Vanfossan and Yeager’s research and submission tackled the cross-industry challenge of container packing optimization. The team developed an application that utilizes LiDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging, to swiftly capture package measurements. AI is then used to analyze the data inputs and automatically generate the most optimal packing strategy. The platform interface was made available as an iOS application, providing a single tool for operators to record and verify item dimensions, visualize recommended packing strategies, and access detailed packing instructions.
The judges awarded the duo first place for their significant contribution to the field of operations research, which focuses on using advanced analytical methods to improve operational efficiency.
"We are very proud of Samuel and Dorian for their achievement," said Andy Montgomery, Director of Products and Innovation at Object Computing. "Their groundbreaking work is an excellent example of the kind of solutions our team can produce, and we can’t wait to see what they will do next."
The AI-powered bin packing optimization application serves as a valuable tool for businesses that are looking to improve their efficiency, reduce waste, and increase profitability. The solution is scalable, multi-device capable, and easy to use, making it a viable option for businesses of all sizes.
