This year's annual National SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) Conference takes place at the Connecticut Convention Center in downtown Hartford, CT. The three-day event runs from April 21st through the 23rd. OCI, as a Phase II SBIR award recipient, has accepted an invitation to attend.
The Conference and Exhibition features speakers from industry and government agencies on the need for the type of innovation that small businesses offer and the available opportunities. OCI will have a booth in the exhibit area which will be open for two days. The primary product that OCI will be demonstrating is OpenDDS, the open source implementation of the Object Management Group's Data Distribution Service for Real-time Systems specification. OCI will demonstrate the analysis of streaming video (which ordinarily would be live) taken of highway traffic and the subsequent transmission of that key data, including "alerts" to a traffic management system. The event organizers also provide a service which matches SBIR winners with potential users of their technologies, and schedule one-on-one meetings. On Day 2 there is an evening reception at which the conference hosts a poster board event where SBIR winners can interact with a wider audience.
This event, with its intensive approach, is considered a model for how to help SBIR companies transition their products into commercial offerings. OCI will be using the event to meet with Department of Energy about SmartGrid applications, NASA on satellite message multiplexing, the Department of Transportation on traffic management and the various Department of Defense services that already use DDS in their communication systems.
