Mark Volkmann, OCI Partner, to Keynote Midwest JS

Mark Volkmann, Principal Software Engineer and Partner at OCI, will deliver a keynote address at Midwest JS in Minneapolis, MN in August 2017.

Midwest JS is a premier technology conference focused on the JavaScript ecosystem. Mark Volkmann, a sought-after expert in web development technologies, will deliver two sessions at the conference.  His sessions will focus specifically on React — a declarative, efficient, and flexible JavaScript library for building user interfaces, and Flow — an open source tool from Facebook that is a static type checker, designed to find type errors in JavaScript programs.

"I initially fell in love with React because of its simplicity. But a surprising thing happened," said Volkmann. "Many React developers created and adopted add-ons that ramped up the complexity. These are great additions for the right kinds of projects. However, I am convinced that they are not needed for most applications."

In his first talk, Volkmann will demonstrate how to keep React simple. This includes using create-react-app, a simple way to manage CSS, automating use of the Sass CSS preprocessor, implementing snapshot tests with Jest, a simpler way to manage routes than React Router, a simpler way to manage state than Redux, using async and await for asynchronous operations (like REST calls), and a simple way to get consistent code formatting using Prettier.

In his second talk, Volkmann will cover everything you need to know to get started using Flow, including integration with Babel, ESLint, editors, and IDEs. He will also demonstrate how Flow catches errors without adding types by using type inference and flow analysis.
